Interstitial Cystitis/ Bladder Pain Syndrome (IC/BPS)

Indication

Interstitial Cystitis/ Bladder Pain Syndrome (IC/BPS)

Interstitial Cystitis / Bladder Pain Syndrome is a condition exhibiting symptoms of severe bladder pain, frequent urination, and urgency. The condition or symptoms occur due to rupturing of the urinary bladder wall GAG layer. Pentosan Polysulfate Sodium is the only available treatment, highly recommended, and first choice of most of the urologists.

The mechanism by which pentosan polysulfate sodium achieves its effects in patients is unknown. In preliminary clinical models, pentosan polysulfate sodium showed its activity by adhering to the bladder wall mucosal membrane and forming a layer of GAG. The drug may act as a buffer to control cell permeability preventing irritating solutes in the urine from reaching the cells.
